Sail Soil Soul

15 July 2020

Dear Friends,

Delighted to offer news of further Journeys in Design this summer and autumn: Salvage Scotland, Flax Fields and Making Millie.

Set sail with us around Scotland

‘Salvage Scotland: a maritime SOS’ is a voyage around Scotland’s coastal communities exploring sustainable design and circular economies at sea. Launching in the environs of our National Maritime Museum in Irvine, we set sail up the west coast via North Uist to Orkney then round and down east via Montrose along the beautiful coast of Fife to Burntisland.

This is the first of an annual summer sailing and you’re most welcome aboard. Join us as we gather treasure en route and reach out to The Netherlands and Ireland with two international initiatives: ‘Seaweed so Good’ and ‘The Currach Project’.

Also this year, we continue to gather Our Linen Stories with two projects: Flax Fields and Making Millie, celebrating contemporary creativity, drawing on Scotland’s heritage and deepening regional links between Scotland and N.Ireland.

Can you help us sow and sew?

Celebrating the agricultural heritage of flax farming in Scotland, can you sow some flax? We are seeding a project to supply material for use by contemporary designers in Scotland.

Celebrating industrial heritage through the lives of hard working factory women, can you make up and mark a Linen Millie tea towel doll for a new display?
